Chapter Fourteen

In the following days, they each continued their respective work, Jordan helping Nina and Agent Gael to compile and sort through the information they had gotten regarding the timeline while trying not to step on anyone else’s toes, Ellie chasing after her witness/potential suspect.

Like her, Jordan doubted that Harlan James was the killer, but she had to follow up on the report of the dispute anyway.

She ran into Rob Garcia from the Internal Affairs Bureau in the break room shortly after he had completed his interview with Ellie. The two of them had already worked on a task force together, and he had often hinted that there would be a job for her at I.A. if she wanted it. But all things considered, Jordan still didn’t plan to go anywhere.

“Wild times,” he remarked. “When you have a minute, there’s something I’d like to run by you.”

“Agent Torres is in the middle of an interview, so it’s now or never.”

He shrugged and went to get himself a coffee. “This is an unusual situation, to put it mildly. It’s nothing official, yet, but there’s this curious story about Miles Clairmont sending in reinforcements.”

“I wouldn’t call it that. You know the background. He and Ellie dated in high school, and he feels entitled. Of course she told him no.”

“Yeah, she mentioned that. I understand everyone dealt with the chaos best they could, but this is particular. Did you know that he denied any involvement?”

“Yes. Come on, what are you saying?” She had promised Ellie it would be okay. Jordan’s patience with anyone misreading the non-relationship Ellie had with Miles Clairmont was coming to an end quickly.

“Nothing. I wanted your impression, that’s all. This was a high stress situation that could have gone many ways, and I believe anyone would be tempted, but I know Harding is a lot more by the book than you are.”

He laughed at the irritation that was undoubtedly visible on her face.

“Don’t you deny it. You know I’m not here to pin anything on anyone. We all just want the whole picture, and I have an ex-cop turned terrorist still whining in his hospital bed, two dead attackers and a whole lot of questions.”

“I understand that part, but I’m sorry, I can’t help you. I wasn’t there.”

Her tone might be a bit too harsh to be appropriate, but before she could acknowledge that, the door opened, and Derek walked in, stopping cold when he saw the two of them.

“I can come back another time. Torres told me I could find you here.”

“Oh, she’s done, then. Thanks. Like I said, that’s my impression. Mr. Clairmont will do and say anything if he thinks it benefits him somehow. It would be interesting to see if he had something to gain from those deaths, but you can see how that would present a conflict of interest for me.”

“I see,” Garcia acknowledged with a wry smile. “I’ll run it by your lieutenant. See you around, Jordan.”

“Yeah, I’m afraid so,” she muttered. “Hey, hang on a second.
